Forkasted ("we", "our", or "the app") is a family meal planning application. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal data. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.
Information We Collect
We collect the following information when you use Forkasted:
- Account information: Your name, email address, and password when you create an account.
- Recipe data: Recipes you save, including ingredients, steps, ratings, and source links.
- Meal plans: Your weekly meal plan selections and preferences (number of days, preferred tags, excluded proteins).
- Grocery lists: Generated grocery lists, checked items, store preferences, and pantry staple settings.
- Family data: Family group membership and invitations when you use the family sharing feature.
How We Use Your Information
We use your information solely to:
- Provide and operate the Forkasted meal planning service.
- Generate personalized meal plans and grocery lists based on your preferences.
- Enable family sharing so household members can collaborate on meal planning.
- Send transactional emails (password resets, family invitations).
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
Location Information
Forkasted includes an optional feature that detects when you are near a grocery store (e.g. HEB, Costco, Sam's Club) so it can surface your grocery list automatically. Location handling for this feature works as follows:
- Your device location is only requested when you open the grocery list screen ("When In Use" only — never in the background).
- Your coordinates are compared to a bundled list of store locations entirely on your device. They are never sent to our servers or any third party.
- The result of the nearby-store check is cached briefly in your browser's sessionStorage and cleared when you close the app.
- You can deny or revoke the location permission at any time in your device settings; the rest of the app will continue to work normally.
Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored securely using industry-standard encryption. We use HTTPS for all data transmission and store your data on secure cloud infrastructure. Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text.
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
- Vercel: Application hosting and deployment.
- Neon: Database hosting.
- Resend: Transactional email delivery (password resets, invitations).
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Request correction of inaccurate data.
- Request deletion of your account and associated data.
- Leave a family group at any time.
Children's Privacy
Forkasted is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes by posting the updated policy on this page with a revised date.
